DC Protests - June 2nd

June 05, 2020

These are scenes from the protesting in DC on Tuesday afternoon, June 2nd. Unlike the previous nights, on this day, the protests were fairly calm. So, my husband ventured out to take photos and videos of the peaceful gatherings, destruction from the past weekend and the overall state of Washington, DC.

Old folks, young women, men and even children participated in peaceful protests all over the United States this past week. Since protests in the U.S. began, people living in countries across the globe have joined the cause and are protesting with us. It is truly a magnificent gathering and shows that most of us are united.

It is unbelievable to witness so many people (especially young people) stand up for what they believe in. People of all colors have joined together to protest the murder of George Floyd. To demand change in policies that allow racism and police brutality to exist in our country and all over the world.

This is the newly installed fence that separated protestors from the authorities protecting the White House. I think this fence was a positive addition to the police tactic. It allowed space between the opposing sides and reduced provocation from either side. A much needed space to benefit the protestors.

It was surprising to see custom merchandise being sold a few days after the protests began. I was more than happy to purchase a Black Lives Matter t-shirt and I Can't Breath protective face mask. These are probably the most important items in my closet. They will remind me that I lived during this time, I was there to witness the mass protesting that changed the future.

I know we haven't seen great change yet, but I know this movement will not be ignored or forgotten anytime soon. In a country that is so divided racially, it is remarkable to see all of us come together in the fight against racism and police brutality.

I gotta say - there are some brave reporters in DC. I watched live feeds of the protesting every night until I couldn't keep my eyes open anymore. I want to thank those reporters for educating me and allowing me to stay informed from the comfort of my own home.

I'm an opinionated person, but I'm not one to protest on the front line. Albeit, I have found other ways to support this cause - Posting photos and speaking up on my blog is just one of them. Using social media to spread the word and donations to organizations and bailout funds are other ways to contribute.

The Criminals masquerading as protestors were selfishly destroying our city and certainly not supporting the Black Lives Matter cause. They vandalized buildings, monuments, shattered store fronts and looted. This small group caused chaos this past weekend.

The same is happening all over the United States. These rebels are smothering the amazing cause so many peaceful protesters are working endlessly for. I myself was terrified that the rioters would reach my community - just a short walk from the White House.

It is truly shocking to walk around this beautiful city and see the first floor of buildings boarded up. Thank you to the women and men who worked overtime repairing store fronts and boarding up businesses. You have been instrumental in our fight against vandalism and looting during the protests in Washington, DC.

Black Lives Matter flags hang outside businesses and residential. This is another way you can contribute to the cause. Show your support any way you can. No gesture is too small and every opinion counts.

My favorite photo - this young girl is sitting alone at the end of my street, protesting Black Lives Matter. Her sole protest brings tears to my eyes. I hope one day she sees this post and knows that this single moment changed lives of the people who were fortunate to walk by. Thank you.

This blog post is a gesture to show that I support this cause. I'm with you in this fight for equality. Our voices have been heard, but we cannot relax until there is significant change. Let's keep marching forward..

Glamping 101

January 28, 2020

What is glamping? It's fancy camping. Glamping at Getaway House is by no means roughin' it! AND the best part is you can glamp year-round, cause you have a cozy, heated cabin with everything you need..

Getaway House has small cabins stocked with everything you need to camp comfortably. There is a bathroom with a hot shower, a small kitchen with a two burner stove, sink and fridge. The kitchen is also stocked with cooking supples and provisions. Each cabin has a super comfy bed and a lovely view of the outpost. There is also a bin filled with fire wood (for a fee). All you have to pack is comfy clothes, food and beverages.

YETI is a Glampers best asset. The tumbler will keep your hot beverages super hot for hours and the wine glass will keep your cold beverages chilled. I take these two everywhere I go.

YETI has a vast selection of drink ware and coolers. I love this brand. It's super expensive, but worth the cost.

If you're fortunate to have a Getaway House within a reasonable driving distance, I highly recommend a weekend "getaway". The wall-sized window sits beside the bed and allows for breakfast with a view. This is the best feature at Getaway House. Teddy loves sitting in the window.

I'm not the outdoors type, but do enjoy a little stroll with my Teddy Bear. He loves running in the leaves. We've only visited the Getaway House during the Fall/Winter and are looking forward to a few weekends away during the Spring and Summer. I'm sure the compost is even better when the trees are full of leaves.

I suggest you put away your phone and relax a little. I enjoy reading my cookbooks in bed, next to the oversized window of course.

Do prepare a glamping menu - I often make sausages with scrambled eggs smothered with cheese and served with hot salsa for breakfast. I pre-cook the sausages at home, so they just require a re-heat. Of course we barbecue hotdogs - this is usually the first thing we cook. Sheppard's salad is fresh, is easy to prepare at the cabin (will post a recipe on the blog soon). This chopped salad is smothered with feta cheese and pairs nicely with burgers or any other protein. I pack snacks for late-night gaming and lots of wine and beer. My camping menu is not health-conscious at all!

I'm not a huge fan of sitting by the fire. The smoke irritates my eyes and I hate smelling like campfire. Teddy and I usually watch while the husbano gets the fire going and cooks the food. If you love a good campfire, you will enjoy this aspect of glamping at Getaway House.

While the Getaway House cabins are cozy and have everything you need, I suggest you get out, run through the leaves and breath in the fresh air.

The Getaway House outposts are well thought out and there's a lot of ground to cover. Just keep a lookout for wild animals, cause they come outta nowhere.

Pack rubber boots, AND YES, you should absolutely go trompsin' through the woods with no trousers on! Why not? I'd be a little weary of the spider webs though. I came face to face with a huge momma while tryna capture the perfect glamping photo. What I wouldn't do for a pic!

Mother's Haul-i-day!

May 14, 2019

I LOVE PINK - AND, have been coveting the T3 rose collection for months. I'm a lucky girl! I received three T3 styling tools for Mother's Day. Thanks family! I LOVE my new hair styling tools and this shade of pink is perfect!

I've been a fan of T3 for, well, longer than I can remember. I've tried other styling tools, but always go back to this brand. I already have the T3 Featherweight Compact hair dryer and SinglePass Compact straightener in white, BUT had to have the limited edition pink version.

The Singlepass Compact straightening and styling iron is small, but with no less power. There is an internal microchip that maintains an even temperature in the plates. The ceramic plates exude potent heat for quick on-the-go or on-vacation styling.

I love this styling tool. It's small and easy to handle. You can straighten your hair or create loose waves AND your hair will never get caught in the iron. I have no idea how to create a soft curl/wave with a straightener, so I stick to my straight, sleek bob. My hair is really soft to begin with, but this straightener takes it to a new level of silkiness.

If you have a short hair style, I highly suggest you opt for a compact straightener to avoid mishaps! I've burnt my face, neck and ears too many times with full-sized hair tools - not anymore!

I use to curl my hair everyday (many years ago), but have no idea how to create the trendy, wavy hairstyle EVERYONE is donning these days. SO, I'm experimenting with the T3 Singlepass Curl 1 1/4" curling iron.

The iron is HUGE! It's al little scary attempting to curl my short hair, but thankfully the tip remains cool, so you can control the styler with ease. There are five heat settings. I like the smart dial - just twist the end to adjust the heat according to your needs. I use heat setting four and am getting a little smoke, so I suggest you move fast - that's why it's called Singlepass!

I'm still struggling to get a nice wave, but I'm sure it's my method and not the styling tool. I need practice! This T3 curling iron is high-quality and your hair doesn't get tangled in the iron. The barrel is large and I assume suitable for big curls and a "natural" wavy look.

The T3 Singlepass Curl 1 1/4" iron has a swivel cord and auto world voltage, so you can take this styling tool anywhere - just pack the appropriate plug extension.

I have purchased the full-size T3 hair dryer in the past, but prefer the travel size - it's lighter, easier to handle and fits in my travel cosmetic bag nicely. The T3 Featherweight Compact hair dryer has two speeds/heat settings, is dual voltage and has a folding handle for easy storage. The T3 Tourmaline SoftAire technology promotes high-speed drying AND reduces frizz. I've done the research - this hairdryer reigns supreme.

T3 claims the body is scratch resistant - I will say that after years of using my white Featherweight Compact hair dryer, the surface on the diffuser was peeling off - hence my desire to get a new one. You can however purchase a replacement T3 diffuser online for $3.

This T3 Featherweight Compact design has been on the top of my go-to hair care list for years, but just got a pink upgrade.

..Toodles 2018

December 30, 2018

..TOODLES 2018. It was a rough one emotionally, but my beauty exploration and fashion addiction survived the madness and remained strong and exciting! I'm heading into 2019 with a new attitude towards health and beauty. My shoe and handbag addiction will probably continue to be ridiculous (by some standards), but 2018 has taught me to make changes, embrace new brands and get creative with my style and makeup.

My biggest obsession is sunglasses. I purchased too many Chloé sunglasses this year! MIU MIU sunnies recently took over my looks, but Chloé reigns supreme on my sunnies shelf.

I just snagged these MIU MIU star embossed sunglasses and Swarovski crystal embellished sunglasses and glasses chain at Holt Renfrew in Toronto. LOVE! I'll be seeing stars in 2019!

My personal style remains the same - chic joggers and sock-style boots with printed t-shirts and sweatshirts. My favorite clothing brands are 3.1 Phillip Lim, Fenty X Puma, Tularosa, GRLFRND, Mother, Spell & The Gypsy Collective, For Love & Lemons, Monrow sweatpants , Karl Lagerfeld and Fiorucci (t-shirts and sweatshirts) and Nation LTD (to name a few).

My infatuation with designer shoes and handbags remains expensive! Louis Vuitton handbags are still taking over my collection. I finally found myself an LV sales representative in New York and she's fabulous. Some LV bags are impossible to get (unless you have a rep). She snagged me a Summer Trunk tote and Time Trunk Alma handbag as soon as they hit the sales floor. She's my handbag fairy!

After a five year hiatus, Gucci has made a comeback in my collection. My husband tracked down a Gucci bag I had been coveting for months and gave it to me for our 10 year anniversary. Best gift a girl could get! AND, of course, I'm still a Chloé girl and LOVE Chloé handbags.

I LOVE BOOTS! I'm still rocking Fendi Rockoko and Yeezy sock-style boots. I purchased too many Adidas sneakers in 2018, got some Chloé boots and a new pair of Fendi fur slides (possibly the best purchase of 2018). I'm looking forward to summer, so I can strut around in my mew Fendi slides.

Another year gone and while I spent most of my time shopping and exploring new beauty products, my go-to brands remain the same. For anti-aging, Neocutis is my favorite. I got a mini fridge for Christmas and am keeping my Neocutis products in there. Applying cold eye and face creams is new to me and I love it! AND, I still love Bobbi Brown Cosmetics Hydrating Face Cream (great for calming rosacea) and Extra Eye Repair Cream.

My favorite make-up brands list has changed a little. Benefit Cosmetics, Too Faced, Dior and beautyblender reign supreme in my Cosmocube. Oh and there's a few KKW Beauty products in there too - love the brushes. My long-time favorites, Bobbi Brown and Laura Mercier are still taking up some real estate in the cube.

I still get IPL (Intense Pulsed Light Treatment) and Clear + Brilliant laser Treatment. These two combined leave my skin looking fresh, vibrant and reduce the appearance of my rosacea. They are painful and expensive, but worth it. I'm also still doing botox. I've had a few botched jobs and am a little turned off, but I think it's about finding the right dermatologist..

My hair is finally back to normal. I suffered from botched hair for two years and it was a struggle. The silver lining is that I tried too many hair care products and shared my thoughts on b.a.gorgie.com. I hope my product reviews helped a few of you. Surprisingly, I introduced a new shampoo and conditioner to the routine in 2018. My long-time favorite Bumble and Bumble Hairdresser's Invisible Oil shampoo and conditioner still have a permanent spot in the shower, but now I'm alternating with Olaplex No. 4 Bond Maintenance shampoo and No. 5 Bond Maintenance conditioner. This stuff is amazing!

I tried Coolsculpting and got "minimal results". Highly disappointing. After waiting four months for maximum results and feeling like I spent too much money and wasted my time, I decided to start working out (there are no shortcuts). I also changed my eating habits. I'm eating healthier and smaller portions. I'm proud to say, I've lost 14 lbs. YUP! It was a slow process (took an entire year)! I have another 6 lbs to go and am hoping to get a MIRROR Home Gym in the 2019. HINT HINT.. I'm also considering the new fat reducing procedure Vanquish. I'll let ya know how it goes.

My favorite body wash and creams are Sol de Janeiro and Aveeno (for those sensitive days). The caramel-pistachio scent of Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum body cream, Brazilian Crush body mist and Brazilian 4 Play moisturizing shower cream-gel are delicious! This cosmetic brand has made a few appearances on the blog and still reigns supreme.

That's my favorite cosmetics, procedures, fashion brands and style diary for 2018. I'm still a cosmetic junkie and am obsessed with shoes and handbags. I have a few trips in 2019 and am already planning my outfits..

Sakara

October 17, 2018

I'm not a vegetarian, but I do dabble in the Sakara plant-rich diet once and while. I have been doing the Sakara meal plan once a month for three-five days, I'm bingeing on plants - Sometimes I cheat (but, only once a day)! There's a lot I love about this meal program, a few things I don't and some stuff I'd like to see Sakara change.

Sakara is a nutrition-rich meal plan, comprised of fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. Like most meal delivery subscriptions, you have the option of skipping any week and you can choose between three, four and five days each week. Your food delivery will arrive in the wee hours of the night in preparation for Monday and another batch on Thursday.

The food comes in plastic containers on ice and must be refrigerated immediately. Sakara just changed their containers and the new ones are SO MUCH BETTER! I struggled to get the old containers open and the new ones stack nicely.

Monday's delivery includes Sakara Detox Water Concentrate and Beauty Water Concentrate, as well as Wellness Tea. Thursday's delivery includes Wellness Tea. We'll come back to these items..

The user friendly site allows you to individually customize your delivery each week by choosing breakfast, lunch, dinner or just two or all three meals. Unfortunately, the menu is what it is and you can only swap one meal per week. This is a deterrent for me - I'd like to have more meal choices. It would be great if Sakara posted a menu and allowed customers to choose their meals. Often, I'm stuck with funky food concoctions that don't appeal to me.

Lets talk about the food.. There's a lot! I wouldn't consume this much food on non-Sakara days. AND, some of the meals are super heavy (in the container and in your stomach). SO, my husband and I typically do the five day option and share the food, while subsidizing the diet with store bought produce and other items. This is great, cause he eats the meals I don't like! It also helps with the cravings, cause we're not going full-on vegetarian for five days.

The food is surprisingly delicious. I say that because, some of it doesn't look so great, but looks can be deceiving. There's a lot of flavor and wide range of plant-rich foods in every meal.

My favorite are the muesli or granola with Pink Silk Mylk or Blue Majic Mylk. These 'milks' are delicious and kinda fun. The Pink Silk Mylk is subtly sweet with a smidge of saltiness (my favorite). If I could buy these Sakara Mylks, I would stock up every week and eat breakfast more often (I never eat breakfast).

I also love the coconut yogurts with granola. I don't do sweets, but would eat this yogurt for breakfast and dessert a few times a week. DELICIOUS!

The other breakfast options - tartines, muffins and bars are a hit or miss for me. I find the bars super-heavy for breakfast and a little dry, but they are tasty. These breakfasts are usually accompanied by a jam and berries or a mini fruit.

Each meal is labelled for a specific day and meal - breakfast, lunch and dinner. I mix it up and always eat the most appealing meals first. The soups are excellent, very flavorful and not too filling. They're often accompanied with a small salad. The salad dressings are yummy. I'm a salad person and a big fan of fresh salad dressings.

The main course salads never disappoint. Of course, there's leaves and sometimes berries, nuts, quinoa and veggies. I love the avocado smothered in seeds (I forget what it's called). My favorite salad is the Youth + Beauty Salad. These salads will last me for lunch and leftovers with dinner - there's a lot. One thing is for sure, you will not be hungry on this plant-rich diet.

The flatbreads are delicious. Usually there is 'faux' cheese and savory pesto, along with veggies. The Sakara burgers are comprised of the same signature bread. It's like eating condensed seed bread. Very heavy!

I've had three pastas and love the wild mushroom pasta and the pesto with tomatoes pasta. I was super excited to try the Sakara-Style Pasta Bolognese (swapped out another meal for two portions of this one), but it was too bizarre for my taste. These bowls of pasta are way too much for one meal, especially lunch.

Some of the bowls/meals are strange and a little too mushy for me. I don't eat mush - no bananas, soggy salads, sautéed greens.. Some of the meals have sautéed spinach at the bottom - eww! While the flavor is great, anything with a 'wet' texture goes on the husbands menu. He enjoys them very much, BUT he would literally eat anything!

The Sakara plant-rich diet, meal plan is SUPER expensive. I always say, eating healthy costs a lot of money, so this doesn't surprise me. I do wish subscribers had more options with food selection. AND, I am reluctant to spend so much, when I can't remove meals that don't appeal to me.

The Detox Water Concentrate and Beauty Water Concentrate come in a glass bottle with a dropper. Simply add the concentrate to your water as part of your Sakara diet. I really like the Detox Water Concentrate - its barely there flavor is suitable (I love water and don't like adding flavor) and contains Chlorophyll + 72 trace minerals - nothing wrong with that! The Beauty Water Concentrate contains Silca + Rose and 72 trace minerals. It tastes like flowers - GROSS! I once requested to swap out the Beauty Water Concentrate for an additional Detox Water Concentrate, but Sakara feels that both concentrates are essential to the diet. More money wasted!

The Wellness Tea doesn't taste very good either. I'm a HUGE tea fan, but this has a black tea flavor and is too strong. I never drink it and am always offering it to other people.

I do feel better after a few days of consuming plant-rich meals. I feel like I ate too much, but the idea of pumping my body with nutrition-rich food gives me a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. Albeit, once a month is enough for me!

My Must-Haves

September 15, 2018

I'm obsessed with Fendi Rockoko boots and impatiently wait each season for the new color schemes and unique embellished styles. There's never a season that I don't fall in in love with another pair of Rockcoco boots (or two). This sock-style boot pairs perfectly with chic joggers (my favorite) and elongates your legs with skirts and dresses. They're surprisingly comfortable and of course, high-quality.

This season, I have two pairs on my wish list, but if I have to choose, imma opt for the logo lace-up style. The signature FF motif detail and contrasting stripe along the collar give these boots a sporty vibe. I'll don these navy blue boots with stylish navy, grey and Burgundy joggers. This color scheme is available in navy blue with a red stripe or black. This color scheme and design is also available in the FF knit sneaker style. Both styles are available at Farfetch.

I recently discovered Fiorucci and love the angels print on the t-shirts and sweaters. I'm not a crop top kinda girl, but this Fiorucci green and white striped cropped t-shirt paired with the somewhat high-waisted Fiorucci black joggers is really flattering and fun (available at Intermix and revolveclothinng.com). Both don the Fiorucci name in pink (I love anything pink). I never wear black, but this styling (seen on revolveclothing.com) is sporty and cute - the perfect loungin' around outfit.

Another one of my favorite brands is Mother. The casual brand is predominantly denim and trust me, Mother jeans are amazing. The fit is perfect and for 'older' women, the high-waist style is really flattering.

These Mother no zip misfit pants are the perfect combination of camo and stripes (kinda my thing this fall/winter). You can barely see that there are stripes in this photo, but there is a blue, red and blue stripe along the sides. The pants are medium-weight and soft. There is a zip fly with button closure and elastic leg opening - love the jogger style. The fit is nice (size-up) and the color scheme is perfection. YES, I have a pair and waited for months to get them (pre-ordered). These pants are available at motherdenim.com and revolveclothing.com.

These Fendi Colibrì slingback pumps are gorgeous (available at Farfetch). The houndstooth pattern on the toe cap and checkered pattern on the toe, along with the Fendi hearts embroidered detail on the slingback strap and silver-tone heal are the perfect juxtaposition. There is also a pad on the slingback strap and hiking hardware, giving these high-fashion slingback pumps and sporty vibe. There is so much going on with this design and I LOVE IT!

AND, the other Fendi Rockoko boots on my list (available at mytheresa and Fendi) - these boots don the stitched Fendi name and crystal-embellished hearts. The contrasting cream hue and black and will look great with just about anything you wear this fall/winter and especially elevate your party look. I've been drooling over these boots for weeks.
