A Lip Scrub & Facial Massage

February 26, 2020

I'm always on the prowl for a new lip treatment, especially one that boasts plumping qualities. The Nurse Jamie NuLips RX duo isn't a lip plumping regiment, but does promote healthy, nourished lips; which will make your pout appear fuller.

Oh and the all natural lip balm contains the famed Hyaluronic Acid - don't get caught up in the Hyaluronic hype. Everything contains this "magical" ingredient. The balm does however contain beneficial oils - this is essential in a nourishing lip balm.

I really like the Nurse Jamie Anti-Microbial Silicone Lip Brush. It's soft and induces circulation in your lips. It's not brittle enough to remove dry skin - you're gonna need a proper exfoliator for that. Albeit, the soft bristles will give you a gentle lip massage.

The lip-shaped, silicone lip brush has a handle for easy use, that also has a suction cup - In case you wanna stick it to the lip balm pot, your mirror or fridge?!

This lip balm and lip brush duo is relatively small and great for travel. My entire body dries out on planes and in hotels, so I tend to overdose on lip balm.

The Nurse Jamie NuLips RX Balm is all natural, petroleum free and contains beneficial oils to promote healthy, soft lips - Beeswax, Shea Butter and Almond Oil - to name a few.

The balm has a thick, wax-like appearance and feel. The NuLips balm reacts to the heat from your lips and swiftly melts into an oily texture. The scent is sweet and light. My only complaint is the pot. I prefer lip products in a tube, so I don't have to dip my fingers in the product.

Is this a must-have duo? Umm.. No. There are better exfoliating lip treatments and this one is too gentle for me. I highly suggest using your toothbrush to exfoliate your lips. That being said, this NuLips balm will not go to waste and the gentle anti-microbial silicone lip brush has earned a spot in my travel cosmetic bag.

While perusing the Nurse Jamie line-up, I decided to give the NuVibe RX Amethyst Massaging Beauty Tool a try. I'm seeing a lot of facial massage devices on Instagram and being a beginner, I went with the first tool to pop up on my screen. I should know better!

This facial massaging tool utilizes gentle (emphasis on the gentle) sonic vibration to promote good circulation. Essentially, this is what most facial massage tools promote - circulation, anti-bloat and an overall youthful appearance. The tool heads are usually a stone or metal. This Nurse Jamie beauty tool has a slim design and an Amethyst stone - my birth stone.

At first, I loved this tool. I used it morning and night for a week and although I didn't see a major change in my skin, I enjoyed the gentle massage. I would have given this beauty tool a good grade, but then I found a better facial massager.

I was pursuing the Goop site and purchased the Jillian Dempsey Gold Sculpting Bar..

This 24kt gold sculpting bar is a game changer! I use this beauty tool twice a day for about 8 minutes. I start with my cheeks, massage my nose, between the brows, upwards along my chin and then my neck. Always massage upwards and outwards.

It's super relaxing and I've noticed a HUGE change in my skin. Especially when my face is a little bloated (too much wine and salt). This facial massager de-bloats and really does give you a more youthful appearance.

Aside from Rosacea, I have clear skin and as long as my Rosacea doesn't flare-up, I don't even need foundation. BUT, this 24kt gold beauty tool has taken my skin to a new level of looking refreshed. This tool has a permanent spot in my beauty routine.

To compare the two - The design of the Jillian Dempsey Gold Sculpting Bar is more suitable for massaging the face and neck. The bar glides along your skin with ease and allows you to cover a larger area when you massage upwards and outwards. The Nurse Jamie NuVibe Rx Amethyst stone is clearly a different shape and roughly the same size in diameter, but doesn't have the same effect as the gold bar. Contrary to what people say - shape and size do matter!

Vibration strength is super important and the Jillian Dempsey Gold Sculpting Bar wins this category by a landslide. The gold sculpting bar gives you an intense vibrating facial massage, while the NuVibe pales in comparison.

The Jillian Dempsey tool is slightly heavier and has a sleek design. The bar remains cold longer then the Amethyst stone and is more comfortable when massaging your neck and chin. It is however more expensive, BUT appears to be of better quality. The Nurse Jamie NuVibe Rx retails for $95 and the Jillian Dempsey Gold Sculpting Bar retails for $195. Trust me, the extra $100 is worth it!

Shake & Shot

June 13, 2018

Dr. Jart+ Shake & Shot rubber masks use the same technique found in high-end Korean spas. The cream-to-sheet deeply penetrates the skin, infusing it with active ingredients to combat the usual issues - hydrate, brighten, firm and sooth. Each mask is comes in a small, colorful cup, with a plastic, moulded face lid. The packaging is genius, super fun and appealing.

I purchased the Dr. Jart+ Shake & Shot Rubber Soothing Mask purely due to the color scheme of the packaging. AND am so glad I did, cause I've been battling a cold and sore throat this last week and my face says it all - I need a little soothing. My rosacea is on fire these days and the skin on and around my nose is super dry and irritated. I need a facial miracle!

The The 'Shake it Up! Give Skin a Shot!' steps are easy - Use the spatula to mix the Super Booster and Soothing Liquid Ampoule in the cup. Close the lid, cover the hole with your finger and shake it up. Within 2-3 minutes, use the spatula to apply an even layer of the product all over your face (avoid eyes and mouth). Leave for 15-20 minutes. Start at the edges of the rubber mask and gently peel it off. Use a damp cloth to remove any residue.

The process is easy and kinda fun! You only have to give the cup a quick shake and you'll feel the product getting thick. The final result is a heavy paste. Applying an even layer with the spatula was difficult, so I suggest spreading the product with your fingers. There is a lot of solution - two people could share one cup of rubber mask. The solution has a barely there cream-like scent (I like that). It does feel little cool on the face, but my air conditioning is cranked, so..

Removing the mask was interesting. The product morphed into rubber and peeled off easily. There was a little residue, but I was able to remove it with a damp cotton pad. Being that this is a Rubber 'Soothing' Mask, I was surprised to see my face flare up. My forehead immediately turned red and I had red blotches everywhere else. My skin remained this way for hours. My skin felt a little dehydrated and the dry skin around my nose was intensified. I had high hopes for rubber masks, but this one fell short of my expectations.

The process was fun and I can check rubber masks off my list, but I much prefer charcoal masks and an exfoliator. My go-to masks are the M.A.C Cosmetics Mineralize Volcanic Ash Exfoliator with the Mineralize Reset & Revive Charcoal Mask AND the Bobbi Brown Instant Detox Mask, followed by the Radiance Boost Mask (exfoliator). Search these products on b.a.gorgie to get a full review..

30,000 Feet

May 02, 2018

IGK was founded by prominent stylists from New York, Los Angeles and Miami. These innovative stylists create trends and their products are 'of-the-momment'. The luxury hairstyling brand is expanding their lineup - these contemporary products are just what the beauty-conscious client needs to achieve on-the-go styling and on-trend looks.

I'm obsessed with IGK hairstyling products. I have way too many for someone with a boring bob hair style. Here's a few super-volumizing products that give my hair a much needed lift, dry-cleanse and some on-the-go solutions to everyday hair needs..

I'm reaching new heights (literally) with IGK Direct flight Multi-Tasking Dry Shampoo and 30,000 Feet Volume Powder Spray. Going back to the 'root' of dry shampoo, this 'weightless' powder lifts roots with Bentonite Clay. This stuff is amazing. The concept is old, but the application is innovative. The powder comes in a small bottle that lightly sprays the product on your roots.

I have color-treated black hair and am weary of styling powders. Traces of powder is embarrassing, but this invisible 30,000 Feet Powder Spray is kinda undetectable (unless you touch your hair). This stuff leaves a heavy film on your strands. Yeah, you'll achieve great heights, but it feels gross! AND, you'll definitely have to wash your hair the next day. 30,000 Feet Volume Powder Spray is great for styling, but a bit heavy for me.

IGK released First Class Charcoal Detox Dry Shampoo and Direct Flight Multi-Tasking Dry Shampoo together and I love the results from both products. Choosing between the two came down to scent. The First Class Dry Shampoo has a strong scent that lingers.. Both dry shampoos contain charcoal powder - an oil absorbing, odor eliminating, volumizing super powder. The First Class has seven percent powders, while the Direct Flight has three - I guess that means the First Class is the stronger of the two? It also contains White Tea to sooth your scalp.

Direct Flight Multi-Tasking Dry Shampoo contains Turmeric for a medium cleanse, that extends your style for at least a day. I have super-oily hair and gaining one extra day is appreciated. I'm more inclined to use this dry shampoo on clean hair for texture and volume. After styling my hair, I spray my roots, let it sit for a minute and comb through. I've been doing this volumizing trick for years and it makes a HUGE difference. The scent is strong, but nice. First Class and Direct Flight are available in travel size, so I recommend you try the minis before committing.

The downside to dry shampoo and volumizing powder or any hairstyling product is the buildup on your strands and scalp. A deep cleanse every few washes is necessary. IGK Low Key Cleasing Walnut Scalp Scrub removes buildup, exfoliates your scalp and refreshes your hair. I received this trial size cooling scalp shampoo with a Sephora purchase and LOVE it. This purifying shampoo contains Apple Cider Vinegar to cleanse your scalp and Walnut Oil to nourish your strands. Your hair and scalp feel super-clean and the scent is refreshing. I have oily hair, but my scalp gets dry?! Exfoliating with Low Key removes dry skin, leaving my scalp looking healthy.

IGK Swipe Up No-Frizz Smoothing Hair Wipes smell amazing! I'm so picky about scented products and love this smell. These portable wipes contain Avocado and Camellia Oils to combat static. I NEED THIS! My hair is super fine and I often get static (especially in hotels). Typically, I would use static guard - yup, the static spray used for clothing, but these individually wrapped wipes have forever changed my anti-static methods. You can feel the oils on the wipe, but it glides on nicely, absorbs and feels weightless on your hair and scalp. LOVE!

Hairstyling wipes are innovative and great for the on-the-go styling and touch-ups. Just toss a few in your handbag and refresh on-demand. IGK Swipe Up Charcoal Dry Shampoo Hair Blotting Tissues are convenient and effective. Upon opening the packet, micro powder particles disappear into the air - the activated black charcoal powder absorbs oil and doesn't leave any residue. The scent is a bit strong, but is dissipates quickly.

Gently press the coated side of the wipe against your scalp and hair for immediate oil-absobtion. You can see the oil on the blotting tissue and may need more than one to combat super oily hair - These Swipe Up tissues are small.

Latest Lip Loves

December 28, 2017

I'm addicted to lip products - balms, slaves, lipstick and plumbers. My 'enhanced' lips are, well, a little pouty and super plumped, so I choose muted shades of coral and nude to minimize the lip drama. Red lips would not look good on me - It would be like lips wearing a face! I don't think my dermatologist would allow me to inject more filler, so I opt for plumbers, exfoliating products and super nourishing balms to keep my lips oh-so-pouty.

Yves Saint Laurent Volupte Tint-in-balm is a hybrid lipstick-balm with sheer color. I love the lip-shaped balm center inside the creamy lipstick and the pomegranate scent is addictive. I like color 3 - Call Me Rose (bubblegum pink). It's subtle and slightly glossy. This Tint-in-balm is perfect for those no-makeup-makeup days.

Niki's Nude lipstick by M.A.C Cosmetics is my new favorite shade. The soft corally-pink is perfect on my pale skin tone. I apply balm to nourish, and then Niki's Nude lipstick. This lipstick is creamy and glides on nicely. Both Niki Minaj lipsticks by M.A.C Cosmetics can be found in the 'goodbye' section and are on sale.

Lip exfoliators are amazing for removing dry skin, nourishing AND making your lips appear bigger. The slightly aggressive circular motion of exfoliating and tiny grains increase the blood flow - this increases the volume of your lips and make them appear naturally rosier. I recommend you exfoliate your lips two to three times per week.

I recently purchased Lip Scrubtious by M.A.C Cosmetics - partially because I was in a 'M.A.C mood', but mostly due to the name. The sweet vanilla scent is delicious and the product tastes yummy. I'm not suggesting you eat your lip exfoliators, but it's gonna get in your mouth, so choosing a tasty exfoliator is necessary.

Lip Scrubtious is gentle - much less aggressive than my other go-to exfoliators. I use this sugar-based lip product everyday. This lip exfoliator is available in five flavors - Candied Nectar, Fruit of Passion, Summer berry, Sweet Brown Sugar and Sweet Vanilla.

KNC Beauty Collagen Infused Lip Masks are super fun. There are five masks in a package, so you can share (maybe). These all-natural, jelly-like lip masks moisturize your lips, and well, they're just fun to use. Apply the squishy mask to your lips and relax for 15-20 minutes. These lip masks are great for a lazy night of pampering.

I'm Blushing..

June 02, 2017

The three cosmetics I can't live without are blush, eyebrow gel and lip balm. I LOVE blush and have as many shades as I do lipstick colors. I usually opt for coral shades - cool tones look great with pale skin and black hair, but I do dabble in pinks and neutrals sometimes. Blush changes your complexion (and overall look) dramatically. Whether you want a subtle no-makeup-makeup look, drama or sun kissed skin, you can transform your face with blush. I have a great Spring/Summer collection of blushes - the variety of colors make for the perfect look in every situation..

The Bobbi Brown Cheek Glow Palette (Pearl and Pink Flush) includes the amazing BB Pot Rouge cream blush and a cream highlighter. This palette can be used on your cheeks for a subtle glow or on your lips. I've been using Pot Rouge on my lips for a while, but never on my face. Cream blush always seemed little strange to me - application is more difficult and I like using makeup applicators, rather than my fingers. You gotta prime your face before applying cream makeup and only a little at time. The heat exuded from your fingers allows you to blend the blush nicely, so take your time. If you have dry skin, cream blush is a good solution. The Pink Flush shade and Pearl highlight in this palette are perfect for summer - pretty and subtle.

I've always been a fan of Bobbi Brown blush. There's a variety of shades in matte (for the perfect flushed look), or shimmer. The pigment is strong and the color lasts. The brighter/darker shades can be heavy in color, so layer lightly. Bobbi Brown Blush in Coral Sugar gives you a subtle pink-flush. Apply to the balls of your cheeks for a healthy look. Bobbi Brown Blush in Apricot is a vibrant shade (a deep coral), and is the perfect evening color.

Bobbi Brown Blush in Nude Peach and Laura Mercier Joie De Vivre Windflush are the perfect no-makeup-makeup shades. These colors give you a subtle-flush (wind flush). The peach shades will look great on any skin tone, especially pale tones. When your outta time or just lazy, these blushes are great for a little color and no-fuss look.

MY FAVORITE - Givenchy Prisme Blush in Rite and Givenchy Prisme Blush in Spice. I'm obsessed. These prisme blushes can be used four ways - candid alone (lighter color), bold alone (darker color), harmonious (combination of both), or structured (allow your brush to pick up the light on one end and dark on the other, then apply with the darker shade on the bottom. I have one negative critique - the scent is strong and unpleasant (kinda like an old ladies perfume). I'm not sure why blush should even have a scent. If you're sensitive to smells, this blush is not for you.

These colors are AMAZING. The peachy-coral shades of Rite (pictured) are sweet and subtle - Perfect for a sun-kissed glow. Spice is a little darker, with a coral undertone and pink highlight. LOVE.

Babe Body Scrub

May 05, 2017

In preparation for self-tanning season (Imma faux-tan kinda girl), I've been sampling body scrubs. The verdict - Babe Green Tea Body Scrub is my favorite.  This body exfoliator has transformed my tired, 'winter' skin. The robust granules are tough on dry skin. You can really feel the aggressive scrub removing the dead, parched skin and you'll love how soft your skin feels after a few applications (even those little bumps on the back of your arms will slightly diminish). WARNING - this stuff is aggressive, so if your skin is sensitive, I don't recommend using Babe Body Scrub. I used the entire bag (everyday) for a week and now I can't live without it.

The Green Tea scent is refreshing. I used Babe Body Scrub Pink Salt as well but didn't love the smell. Babe Green Tea Body Scrub doesn't leave your skin feeling oily, but just refreshed and smooth. The resealable bag is convenient, cause you can dump some product into your hand and exfoliate your skin by section. I also use this scrub on my feet after a pedicure - amazing results (yes, I do my own pedicures). There's also a coffee scrub that is supposedly good for cellulite. I think the three scrubs do the same thing but smell different. Caffeine-infused salts are not going to diminish cellulite!

I really like this body scrub and will definitely repurchase. Babe Green Tea Body Scrub is available at Sephora.

Bobbi Brown Remedies

May 01, 2017

When I read that Bobbi Brown Cosmetics would release a collection of skin 'Remedies', I was super excited. I felt like I was cheating on my adored Glossier serums, but a collection by my favorite cosmetic brand is too tempting. Of course, I purchased all six Bobbi Brown Remedies (product junkie here). These remedies treat everything from dehydration to irritation to problem skin..

Skin salves are having a moment - or maybe I'm having a salve moment and just assume everyone else it? The Remedies Skin Salve No. 57 is a MUST HAVE. A few weeks ago, I peeled dry skin on the side of my nose and literally caused a huge split (super painful and stupid). I applied this salve many times for three days and the wound healed completely. This salve is great for chapped lips and super dry areas (anywhere you have damaged skin). I use it on my cuticles - it keeps them nourished and they appear to be in much better condition. The super nourishing ingredients in Skin Salve were chosen to repair dry, damaged and compromised skin. Shea Butter binds moisture to the skin, while Beeswax creates a barrier. Natural root extracts, carrot and licorice, were added for their moisturizing properties. The super-thick formula has a pleasant, fresh scent - some say carrots, but I smell cucumber (even though there is no cucumber on the ingredient list).

I still struggle with the idea of using oil to combat oily skin and clogged pores. Years ago, my dermatologist told me to avoid anything that contained oil - BUT apparently oil is the new 'de-clogging' remedy. Skin Clarifier No. 75 is comprised of skin-purifying Manuka Oil, Sea Buckthorn Oil, Rosehip Oil (rich in nutrients), and Saw Palmetto Oil to control sebum levels. Together these oils exfoliate your skin and clean out pores. This thick clarifier is super oily (smells like oil too) and heavy on your skin. I recommend you apply this treatment last in your nightly routine and a little goes a long way, so just a few drops. Skin Clarifier is the only in the collection that causes my rosacea to flare-up, so I apply it sporadically. I can't say if it's improving my skin as of yet.. Layer over Reviver and under Skin Relief to treat problem skin.

Skin Relief No. 80 - Natural ingredients from Israeli Red Algae and Knotted Kelp calm skin irritation and reduce the appearance of redness. Red Algae is known for its soothing properties and redness reducing powers. This non-greasy, calming algae complex is weightless, absorbs fairly quickly and leaves your skin feeling soft. I have rocasea and need all the 'skin relief' I can get. My face is usually red in the AM (after washing and applying product), and this serum does temporarily relieve the redness. Layer over Skin Reviver and Skin Clarifier to treat reactive, problem skin.

Skin Moisture Solution No. 86 - This intense hydration compound contains Sodium Hyaluronate - a powerful moisture magnet. It can absorb up to 1000 times its weight in water. This Skin Moisture Solution promotes natural Hyaluronic acid (skin plumper) production and restores skin's moisture levels. The solution is medium-weight, absorbs fairly quickly and feels silky on your skin. In combination with Skin Reviver and Skin Relief, my skin does appear more hydrated and less irritated. Layer over Skin Reviver and under Skin Fortifier (super heavy tonic) to boost dull, dry skin.

Skin Reviver No. 91 - This power greens ferment is super rich in antioxidants. The lightweight solution contains extracts from green algae, fresh kale, spinach and brussels sprouts. YES, those little, smelly (I'm not a fan), cabbage-like orbs are making their way into skincare. This remedy is kinda like a green juice for your face. The ferment goes on like water and absorbs quickly. The scent is strange; familiar, but unrecognizable and subtly unpleasant (you get used to it). I like the Skin Reviver ferment very much. It absorbs fast and doesn't irritate. I wouldn't say my skin looks 'amazing' due to these remedies, but with all the stress and traveling I've endured, I don't look too bad! When layering Bobbi Brown remedies, apply Skin Reviver first.

Skin Fortifier No. 93 repairs and replenishes the skin's moisture barrier. Your skin's ability to protect itself will allow it to hold moisture and keep toxins out. This light-green tonic contains lipid-rich ingredients to supplement your skin's ceramides, fatty acids and cholesterol. Muru Muru Butter promotes supple skin, cold pressed Meadowfoam Seed Oil and Olive Oil supplement skin's fatty acids, Rasberry Leaf Wax is an essential lipid that gives skin structure and Soybean Sterols bolster skin's cholesterol. Sound heavy? IT IS! This tonic barely absorbs, so stay away from delicate fabrics. THIS STUFF IS THICK AND OILY. I'm not a fan of heavy oil on my face, so I'm hesitant to apply this serum. Layer over Skin Reviver and Skin Moisture to combat dry skin.

I thought I had retired my Glossier serums and shacked up with Bobbi Brown Remedies, but I am not so sure.. I will repurchase the Skin Reviver No. 91. It's super light-weight, absorbs quickly and I'm a fan of 'topical greens'. I'm on my second bottle of No. 80 and No. 86, but I'm not sure I will repurchase. I do however LOVE the salve.

Each bottle has a smart dropper that allows for easy, controlled dispensing. Always layer (never mix solutions), and allow each remedy to dry before applying the next. Apply these remedies light-weight to heavier solutions. Bobbi Brown Remedies retail for $45. The Rescue Kits retail for $35 and contain 3x3 ml remedies to combat different skin issues - Recovery Rescue Kit, Clarity Rescue Kit, and Moisture Rescue Kit. These kits are a great way to sample the products for a fraction of the cost and the mini bottles are perfect for travel.

Rethink Your Retinol Routine

December 03, 2015

Skinceuticals reigns supreme in skincare products. This dermatologist recommended brand has just about anything you need to combat every problem. I am definitely a fan and it's no surprise that I turned to Skinceuticals for a 'non-prescription' retinol treatment. Clinically diagnosed rosacea temporarily suspended my prescribed anti-aging treatments, but after years of combating this condition, I'm back at fighting the ageing process. Retinol is undoubtedly a great way to replenish your skin, combat wrinkles and revive your otherwise dull complexion - but not without side effects! I'm sure you've heard horror stories about retinol and I'm sure they're all true - I have a few of my own. In the end, it's about moderation and finding what regimen works best for your skin.

I recommend this four-step regimen twice a week to start and increase as needed. Wash your face with Skinceuticals Gentle Cleanser. Of course, it's 'gentle' on your skin, refreshing and nourishing. Then apply Skinceuticals Eye Cream to combat dark circles, puffy under eyes and protect this sensitive area from the retinol. Next, apply a pea-size amount of retinol to your entire face (avoid eye area). I suggest starting with retinol 0.5 and increasing it to 1.0 if needed. Wait 30 minutes (or more) and apply Skinceuticals Epidermal Repair. I use this product for repairing my skin after retinol, sunburns, and any severe dry skin conditions I may have - It's a must-have in my skin care regimen.

The more serious side effects of retinol are chapped skin, severe dry patches, burning and redness. While reducing these side effects, this four-step regimen will nourish your skin, allowing for healing between application and extreme nourishment from the Epidermal repair cream. Retinol will diminish wrinkles, combat discoloration and give you a more even complexion. It's a great solution to ageing skin, but use with caution and don't rush in.

Cold weather, indoor heating and dry conditions will dehydrate your skin, leaving your complexion dull and sometimes chapped! GLAMGLOW Thirstymud Hydrating Treatment Masque will replenish your skin, boost radiance and combat the side effects of severe dry skin. This nondrying masque uses raw honey and ginger root to detoxify your skin, conditioning coconut and sugars along with citrus acid for extreme moisturization. This product smells great, sweet and honey-like. GLAMGLOW Thirstymud Hydrating Treatment Masque will leave your skin feeling soft and super hydrated. You will be surprised with the results of just one treatment.

Apply a thin layer of Thirstymud masque and leave for 10-20 minutes. Use a cotton pad to remove the access masque and gently massage the remaining product into your skin. I recommend applying before bed to allow for maximum hydration.
